Interview with David Fishlock,

Cincinnati Symphony Principal Percussion

Early in my creative career here in Cincinnati, I was fortunate enough to work as a Production Assistant for PBS when a national television crew came into town to film shows with the Cincinnati Pops. Through that job, I met a lot of very cool people, including David Fishlock and his wife Catherine, classically trained musicians who are both very active in Cincinnati’s professional music scene.

Since then, David has worked his way up to become Principal Percussionist for the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops orchestras. I’ve always wondered what it was like working for a major symphony orchestra. From 12-hour-a-day practice sessions to triangles, timpani drums, chimes and an accidental brush mid-concert with a giant gong, David shares the story of how he came into percussion, how he landed the job here in Cincinnati, and what day-to-day life is like as a professional percussionist at the fifth oldest symphony in the U.S.

* Here’s Dave’s official CSO bio page, which includes the fun story he shares about the timpanist whose stool collapsed during a live concert :)
